7 Undeniable Benefits of Breathwork

Benefits of Breathwork

The world is full of distractions. Finding a chance for peace and calm is often exceedingly difficult. However, there’s a simple yet powerful practice that has been gaining attention for its profound effects on mental, emotional, and physical well-being: breathwork.

Breathwork is not just ‘breathing deeply and slowly’. It is a holistic exercise that encompasses various techniques focusing on conscious breathing to promote relaxation, reduce stress and enhance overall health.

From ancient Eastern practices to modern therapeutic modalities, the benefits of breathwork are becoming increasingly recognised and embraced.

What is Breathwork?

Breathwork is a practice that involves conscious control and manipulation of the breath.

The goal of breathwork is to achieve specific physical, mental, emotional or spiritual benefits, through techniques like deep breathing, breath control and rhythmic breathing patterns, often combined with meditation or visualisation.

Breathwork aims to influence the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and enhanced well-being.

7 Benefits of Breathwork we cannot deny

Below, we’ll look at 7 benefits of incorporating breathwork into your daily routine.

1. Increased levels of energy

The respiratory system is the primary gateway for supplying oxygen to our cells and expelling carbon dioxide, crucial processes for energy production within the body.

Through deep breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing or nostril breathing, we optimise this oxygen exchange, ensuring that every cell receives the fuel it needs to function optimally.

As oxygen floods our bloodstream, it energises our cells, muscles and organs, revitalising us from within.

Our student, Wayne, joined one of our classes here at Breathless in the Snowy Mountains. He reported that the techniques he learned gave him a solid understanding of the health benefits of the breathwork:

"The many different breathing techniques gave me a really good understanding of the health benefits and the purpose of the different ways of breathing. By the third day, there was a shift in the way I breathed, I had more energy and felt great, still do."

2. Reduced stress

Breathwork offers a simple yet potent antidote to stress. By engaging in deep, intentional breathing practices, you can tap into the body’s innate ability to relax and unwind. The physiological mechanism behind this lies in the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the body’s “rest and digest” mode. When we consciously slow down our breath and extend the exhale, we send signals to the brain that it’s safe to relax, prompting a cascade of calming neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA while inhibiting stress hormones like cortisol. This shift in the body’s biochemistry not only soothes the mind but also relaxes tense muscles, lowers blood pressure and promotes a profound sense of well-being. One of our passionate students, Paige, enjoyed these benefits firsthand when she went on a trip with our staff here at Breathless:

"The breathless expedition team are so good at what they do and have an abundance of knowledge. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone who is looking to change their habits, reduce stress levels and go deep and learn to connect with themselves more through breath work."

3. Improved mental clarity

Breathwork provides a powerful remedy for the scattered mind. By anchoring our awareness to the rhythmic flow of the breath, we cultivate mindfulness—the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. This focused attention acts as a “mental anchor” somewhat, grounding us in the here and now and allowing us to let go of rumination about the past or worry about the future. As we deepen our breath and expand our awareness, we create space in the mind, clearing away mental clutter and enhancing cognitive function. Sheena, one of our students, reported that she felt peaceful and relaxed after having a breathwork session with our instructor, Johannes:

"Johannes facilitates the best breathwork session EVER! Loved this session so much. Every time it’s insightful and I learn new things about myself and connect with a beautiful community. I’m peaceful and relaxed today!"

4. Regulate your emotions

Emotions are everything when it comes to the human experience. But managing them effectively can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Fortunately, breathwork offers a valuable tool for navigating the often turbulent waters of our “inner being”. When we experience stress, anxiety, or anger, our breathing tends to become shallow and rapid, further exacerbating these negative emotions. However, by slowing down the breath and extending the exhale, we can activate the body’s relaxation response, signalling to the brain that it’s safe to dial down the intensity of our emotions. Jen, a student, experienced this firsthand when our instructors Johannes and Eliza showed her the proper breathwork techniques:

"I was wailing whilst releasing so much emotion, completely present in my body, and unaware of anything else going on around me. Johannes was continually encouraging us to breathe, while Eliza played and sang incredibly beautiful music…such an emotional afternoon which left me feeling so calm and much lighter."

5. Strengthened mind-body connection

Breathwork serves as a bridge between the realms of the mind and body, forging a deeper connection that transcends mere physical awareness. Through focused attention on the breath, practitioners embark on a journey inward, exploring the intricate interplay between sensations, emotions and thoughts. As the breath becomes a focal point of mindfulness, you cultivate a heightened sense of self-awareness, tuning into the subtle cues and signals emanating from within. With each inhale and exhale, they witness the ebb and flow of bodily sensations, the rise and fall of emotions and the flux of mental activity. This heightened awareness fosters a profound sense of introspection, allowing individuals to delve beneath the surface of their consciousness and unearth hidden truths about themselves.

6. Promoting sleep and relaxation

It’s hard to get a moment to ourselves. Breathwork offers a sanctuary of tranquillity, inviting you to surrender to the soothing rhythm of your own breath. Many breathwork techniques are tailored specifically to induce a state of deep relaxation, priming the body and mind for restorative sleep. As the breath slows and deepens, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated – ushering in a cascade of physiological changes conducive to sleep. Heart rate slows, muscles relax, and cortisol levels decrease, paving the way for a smoother transition into the restorative realms of slumber. With each breath, you can sink deeper into a state of profound relaxation, releasing the grip of stress and worry that often impedes sleep.

7. Stress resilience

Life is fraught with challenges and uncertainties, testing the resilience of even the strongest among us. Yet, amidst the turbulence of adversity, breathwork emerges as a steadfast anchor, offering refuge and resilience in the face of life’s storms. In moments of turmoil, the breath becomes a lifeline, a source of solace and stability amidst the chaos. With each mindful inhale and exhale, individuals tap into a reservoir of inner calm and resilience, fortifying themselves against the onslaught of stress and adversity.
